Skincare on a Budget

Recently in Australia we have seen the cost of living increase with a rise in rent/mortgage repayments, groceries, transport and even everyday essential items, all adding to the financial pressure millions of aussies are feeling at the moment. With the cost of living on the rise it's evident that certain financial costs will take priority which means other things like skincare will either be substituted or forfeited all together. This blog post looks at skincare on a budget, my tips as a skin therapist on ways to create a skincare routine that is budget friendly and all the while still using good quality skincare products.

Lets get started.

SIMPLIFY YOUR ROUTINE

It's a misconception that you need a huge assortment of skincare products to achieve your skin goals. If your someone who is finding it hard to financially sustain your skincare routine my advice as a skin therapist is to take it back to skincare basics. A basic skincare routine should consist of a cleanser, serum, moisturiser, sunscreen and exfoliant. Being consistent with the skincare basics and using the correct products for your skin type and/or concern will help you achieve your skin goals as it's far better to be consistent with a small skincare routine than inconsistent with a large skincare routine.

PURCHASE DUAL-USE SKINCARE PRODUCTS

If your someone who is on a budget this is a great tip not only to simplify your skincare routine but also save money on skincare products. A dual-use skincare product is a product that can be used for different uses in your skincare routine. An example - a gentle cleanser can be used as your day and night cleanser but can also be used as your first cleanse to remove makeup removing the need for a makeup remover. The same goes for a different moisturiser at night. Incorporating a moisturiser specific to your skin type and/or concern that can be used day and night can mean you can remove the need for an additional moisturiser at night helping you to save money.

VALUE FOR MONEY

Find a skincare brand that offers value for money. Look at the skincare product size and determine whether your budget allows you to purchase such a product. Brands will offer a 200 ml cleanser for x amount of money which will last you 3-6 months. Other brands will offer a very similar 100 ml cleanser for double the amount of money and only will last you 2-3 months. Its about determining the longevity of a product for a particular price. Keep in mind that everyone's budget is different and what someone considers good value may be different to someone else.

ONLY BUY WHAT YOU NEED

My advice as a skin therapist is to be mindful about your skincare purchases and buying only what you need. Yes its great to purchase a skincare product on sale when we need it and save money but keep in mind marketing is there to entice you to buy more. Millions of dollars are invested into marketing each year using key words, shiny packaging and advertising to influence you to spend money. Although the TGA (therapeutic goods association) have strict guidelines on advertising skincare products it is easy to fall into the trap of spending more than our budget allows.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

I know being on a budget it's tempting to buy cheap skincare products from the supermarket or pharmacy to sustain your skincare routine but as a skin therapist I wouldn't recommend this.

In Australia the Therapeutic Goods Association ( TGA) regulates skincare products. What this means is a skincare product that is TGA approved has gone through rigorous testing to prove the ingredient list is correct and it does exactly what is says it does. Most skincare brands sold at a supermarket or pharmacy aren't TGA approved which means there is no evidence to support the brand will actually benefit your skin.

Supermarket and pharmacy branded skincare also don't contain active ingredients or if they do, its not a high concentration meaning the product isn't going to be effective in treating your skin concerns. The reason for this is because these products are easily accessible on the shelf and there isn't a trained professional there to sell it to you and a highly concentrated product could be detrimental to the skin if sold to the wrong person. Imagine the lawsuits!

Your throwing your money away if your using supermarket or pharmacy branded skincare and expecting to see results with your skin. Spending that little bit extra on a cosmeceutical skincare product is going to be far more beneficial for your skin than anything you purchase at the supermarket or pharmacy.

SKINCARE IS AN INVESTMENT

Investing in a good skincare routine will help to save you money in the long term. By investing in a good skincare routine your correcting or preventing certain skin conditions and/or concerns reducing the likelihood of professional treatments, number of treatments or frequency of these treatments. A good skincare routine can help to correct or prevent congestion, premature ageing, pigmentation and even dehydration saving you money on professional treatments correcting these concerns later on. It's better to prevent these concerns now than spend the money later correcting them.

BOOK A SKIN CONSULTATION WITH A PROFESSIONAL

My advice as a qualified skin therapist is to book a skin consultation with a professional because this will stop you wasting money on skincare products that don't work or aren't beneficial to your skin type and/or concern.
