Cosmetic Vs Cosmeceutical Skincare

Cosmetic and cosmeceutical skincare are two categories of products that aim to improve the appearance and health of the skin. While they share a common goal, there is some key differences between them. This skin blog looks at the differences between cosmetic and cosmeceutical skincare and how to use these different skincare products to effectively treat your skin concerns.

Lets get started.

COSMETIC SKINCARE

Cosmetic skincare can be defined as skincare products purchased over the counter from the supermarket, a pharmacy or at shops such as Mecca or Sephora. Cosmetic skincare refers to products that focus primarily on enhancing the aesthetic aspect of the skin. These products are designed to cleanse, moisturise, and protect the skin, providing a temporary improvement in the appearance of the skin. Although these skincare products can help with skin issues such as dryness or oiliness, they are not effective in treating certain skin concerns like premature ageing, pigmentation or acne.

  • Cosmetic skincare doesn't contain a delivery system to transfer the product through the epidermis to target your skin concern

  • The molecular size of active ingredients is too large to penetrate through the epidermis

  • Cosmetic skincare doesn't have a high concentration of active ingredients

  • And if they do, the stability of these active ingredients is very low meaning the active ingredient deteriorates rapidly after the manufacturer process making them ineffective once purchased from a store

  • Cosmetic skincare is manufactured with fill in ingredients that don't benefit the skin and sometimes can also be harmful to the skin

  • Cosmetic skincare brands rely heavily on marketing to endorse their products because they don’t have the scientific evidence to legitimise the effectiveness of their skincare products.

COSMECEUTICAL SKINCARE

Cosmeceutical skincare can be defined as skincare products that combine the benefits of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals and are usually prescribed by a dermatologist, dermal clinician or skin therapist according to your skin concerns.

  • Unlike cosmetic skincare, cosmeceutical skincare can penetrate deeper into the skin due to it's delivery system and the molecular size of it's active ingredients effectively treating skin concerns such as premature ageing, pigment and acne

  • Cosmeceutical skincare contains active ingredients that have been scientifically proven to have therapeutic effects on the skin

  • Cosmeceutical skincare often contain higher concentrations of active ingredients such as Retinol, Vitamin C and AHA's as opposed to cosmetic skincare

  • Although sometimes at a higher price, cosmeceutical skincare uses the highest quality ingredients to ensure the stability of their products and the effectiveness in treating your skin concerns

WHICH ONE IS SUITABLE FOR ME?

Ultimately, the choice between cosmetic and cosmeceutical skincare products depends on your individual needs and preferences. If you're someone who is looking to enhance your skin's appearance and don't have any skin concerns, cosmetic skincare products may be sufficient. However, if you have a specific skin type and/or concern, cosmeceutical skincare products are going to be much more effective in delivering results and treating your specific concern.
